Things Visio Simply Cannot Forward Engineer

Jul 14, 2011 at 6:15 PM

I've been spending a fair bit of time trying to script a database using the MODELENGLib.dll.  I created my own application using .net with C#.  My approach is similar to that used in the add in available here.  From my investigations, it seems there is ABSOLUTELY no way to get at the following:

  • UDTs
  • Column notes/comments
  • Default values

If anybody has had any luck at getting at these items, I would love to hear from them.

These limitations make using Visio as a database modelling tool questionable.  I find it unfathomable that Microsoft would go to the bother of making this a 'collaborative' database modelling tool, but not providing a means for forward engineering the end result.

Hi,

And what about table notes? Is it possible to script them?

John,

Did you get Visio to forward engineer check constraints?  If so, it gives me hope that this add-in can be enhanced to do the same.

Cordially,
